"Yes, come in," Lady Aster said to the faint knock at the door. The boy was on time; a rare occasion. Students summoned to her office hardly were ever kind enough to show up when they were asked- most were early, fearing being tardy would only land them in more trouble. There were quite a few that were late, whether it be 'getting lost', 'kept late after class', or having simply needed time to build up the nerve, which was always left unspoken. Some few students chose not to show up at all, in which case the Head Guardian needed to go and track them down herself.
She had circled herself with the usual ornaments needed for a hatching ceremony; her quill and inkwell, parchment on which to record, and the small vial of clear amethyst liquid that would be key to the hatching. As her office door opened and the student came inside, she was seen sucking thoughtfully on the clean tip of her quill, trying to remember what she guessed the boy's Guardian would be.
"Have a seat; put your egg up here, if you will?" she said distractedly, etching down the pattern of his egg as she did so.

There was a slight pause after Lady Aster's affirmation before the old wooden door swung inwards. Vero gave a brief smile and a polite nod before moving forward and placing his egg on her desk and then seating himself. The rustling of his sand-colored tunic and the occasional skritch of Lady Aster's pen the only noises that broke the silence in this part of the school. He knew, or course why he was here. At the beginning of the week, he had seen other students receive summons to these same quarters, and march off almost hysterical with fright. Not one however returned the same way, whatever terrible things they imagined had not come to pass, and instead their entire reason for being here had been fulfilled. Or at least, the process had started. No, Kullervo Lyden of Bluestone Valley was not expecting to be returned home. But even knowing why he was here filled him with nervousness. It was here and now that his fate would forever be decided.
Funny, he had expected this day to come with more of a fanfare. The only truly notable experience beside the note being delivered was that his toast at breakfast had been burned. 'Huh, destiny indeed'
Though his heart was pounding, Vero forced a small smile and lifted his pale blue eyes up to meet Lady Aster's. "This is the big moment eh?"

"Indeed it is," Aster nodded, reaching already for the vial of violet liquid. Quite unceremoniously she uncorked it, carefully tipped it, and let a single drop slide onto the shell's slick surface.
The transformation was immediate; quirking a brow in faint surprise, the Head Guardian slid back in her seat to watch. From where the drop had splattered, the shell seemed to melt from the top, slim, glistening layers sliding down the side of the egg. Layer by layer it peeled back, a puddle of water pooling at the object's base. Aster stared unfavorably back at it, mentally wincing as she thought of her mahogany desk. Well, she silently reasoned, its been burnt, frozen, and struck. A little more water shouldn't hurt.
The huddled mass that lay in the midst of the melting shell had, at first glance, a light cobalt coloring. As it uncurled, however, it was seen to be a myriad of blues and whites, nearly shimmering under the different angles with which the light glanced off of it. Small, useless wings stretched out, and large, pale sapphire eyes glanced curiously up at the two humans looking down on it. Lady Aster nodded once, looked down, and marked the findings on the parchment.
"Congratulations, you are now a Dragon Guardian," she said.

For a passing moment as the small bottle he had heard about from other students was unstoppered, Vero wondered what on earth could be in it. However, what the mysterious liquid did after being applied to to his egg was much more interesting, and he quickly forgot his question as slowly, layer by layer his partner was revealed.
"She... she's beautiful!" With a lump in his throat, Vero slowly undid his hand from the knotted mess he had made of his tunic and reached up to tentatively to touch his dragon. His fingers had barely grazed the soft, and still moist scales on the cerulean lump, when her small eyes suddenly focused on Vero's hand and with a playful meep! grabbed onto his index finger with a toothless mouth. The lump quickly replaced by a laugh, Vero lifted his other arm and swept up the happily munching bundle, grimacing slightly as the edge of his sleeve caught the water puddle and promptly soaked up enough to stick to his arm. Fidgeting with Celes (as he had decided to name the little scamp) he reached into a side pocket and pulled out a small soft cloth. Originally the plan had been to collect the shell fragments and keep them for sentimental reasons, but seeing as the egg had completely melted into water... that seemed slightly out of the question at this point. However leaving a potentially damaging puddle on the Head Guardian's wooden desk also seemed to be rather rude. So with a small apologetic smile, Vero mopped up the mess as best he could and stuffed the cloth back into his pocket.
"Uhm, I'm sorry about that... I didn't think the egg would just melt, but uh, thank you Lady Aster. I think I'm going to name her Celes. It is a her right? I heard that the gender is always opposite so... gah." Stopping, Vero took a deep breath and collected his thoughts.
"I apologize for babbling, I guess I'm just a little overwhelmed. But again, thank you Lady Aster. I'll do my best to become a guardian that you'll be proud of."
